Yet another distribution!?
Please tell me that you didn’t!!
NO, we don’t need more GNU/Linux distributions! Not if they don’t provide anything new. If the features you want aren’t something that deals with the lower levels of the system, specially file hierarchy and package management, do not do it, it’s better to simply improve an existing distribution without forking it, or provide an “overlay” set of packages to customize it if the changes couldn’t be accepted otherwise.
There are thousands of non-innovative new distributions that provide nothing but chaos to the free software ecosystem, we don’t need more. It looks like everyone wants to do a new one.
And no, it doesn’t enhace your karma, it will be set to LLONG_MIN premanently, unless, you have a very very very goood reason to start a new distribution.
There are two special kind of distributions that are specially dangerous:
The politically-oriented ones, thus politically-discriminative, segregate the free software user community needlessly. This should be avoided by all means for obvious reasons, specially because that kind of politics have nothing to do with software, so don’t impose any kind of obstacle, everyone can work together.
Those that immitate other operating system look&feel too closely and strictly, don’t make any good since their objectives aren’t to improve the system, but just copy and promote some way of doing things, making the users actually believe there’s no diference, so implicitly promoting the other OS.
Also this leads to the users to think both should work in the same way and actually are the same thing, thus promotes a way of thinking and “culture”. This is specially annoying when it’s about Microsoft Windows way of “thinking” and “culture”.
No estoy totalmente de acuerdo. Sin ir más lejos, comunix es una distro que cae claramente en la segunda categoría que planteás. Pero desde que la idea es minimizar el impacto para usuarios incompetentes, y trae paquetes específicos para su utilización en un entorno como un municipio, tiene implicaciones absolutamente lógicas en el mantenimiento directo de los equipos. Para el departamento de sistemas será indudablemente más simple tan sólo instalar esa distro a medida, y no tener que agregar repositorios, cambiar skins, y un largo etc.
En los casos que una distro nueva no tiene razón de ser, es preferible mantener un repositorio de paquetes, como hace MontevideoLibre con sus paquetes para OpenWrt.

No, no es lógico hacer un fork, sí lo es mantener un depósito de paquetes con todo lo necesario, y un metapaquete para dejar el sistema en el estado deseado.
Recordá que hay cosas como kickstart (para distros basadas en RedHat) o las preconfiguraciones de Debian-Installer.
Además tenés instaladores totalmente automáticos, como FAI de debian (que también funciona con otras distros).
No es una buena excusa esa.

Mi problema con comunix, es el uso indiscreto de los iconos de XP (por lo que veo en las capturas no son parecidos, son los mismos!)

Ismael, concuerdo totalmente con el artículo. En cuanto al punto que introduce Bernabé, en este caso creo que se justifica en tanto su ámbito de distribución sea la intendencia. Muchas comunidades españolas siguieron ese camino como forma de facilitar la adopción en el marco de proyectos educativos y de alfabetización digital. Sin mucho análisis, se me ocurre que es más facil mantener una distro de una, con un conjunto acotado de paquetes y para un conjunto que probablemente sea relativamente acotado de hardware, que integrarse a un proyecto más dinámico y que no controlás.
Pero con seguridad podés reducir las distribuciones a poco más de 1/2 docena.
